About

What is this website?

Well I'm glad you asked! This is a page dedicated to categorising the flags of the world and providing info on them as well, such as year of adoption, previous flags of said country, small info about the country itself and other bits and trivia.

Why are the flags in a weird order on the "LIST" page, and why are some countries not there?

On this page I will go in the order of the English names for countries. Hence, Cabo Verde is named Cape Verde and Cote d'Ivoire is in the I section with the name Ivory Coast. This brings me nicely to another point.

I will be going by the countries of the UN as a list. Hence, no Kosovo (the most recognized country in the world to not be a part of the UN) and Vatican City (a country not in the UN) will not be featured. Those countries, including certain places that have flags but are not countries (Islands, states, territories and so on) will also have a seperate page

Unrecognized places in the world (i.e. South Ossettia, Transnistria and so on) will not be featured on the "list" page. All these places will eventually get their own page, probably called "Unrecognized Places"

Why are some lines missing on the "List" page?

Yeah, probably a bug with Wix itself. That page in particular has a lot of data and I've probably managed to overload Wix itself, and some stuff is missing. Luckily, the flags themselves seem to not go missing, only the black lines seperating each section. They are still there when I try to edit the page, but they just go missing when the page overloads :/

EDIT: The bug seems to be fixed, but I'm not sure :p

What is the verdict on the flag pages?

Ah, you noticed the scores next to each flag! The verdict is based on the 5 vexillological rules of flag design and not my personal taste. I'll keep it as unbiased as possible and only grade the flags based on how well they follow the guidelines. The verdict of each flag is not meant to harm or offend anyone from a country that gets a lower score on a flag than another, the point is not for people to fight others over flag designs. The point is to appreciate the flags that are well-designed and maybe some amazing, less well-known flags and shine a light on some country that could maybe use some improvement on their flag/flags *cough cough* Liberia stateflags *cough cough*.

The basic rules of flag design are (taken from the "Good flags, bad flags" by the North American Vexillological Association):

  1. Keep It Simple. The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory…

  2. Use Meaningful Symbolism. The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes…

  3. Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three which contrast well and come from the standard color set…

  4. No Lettering or Seals. Never use writing on any kind or an organization’s seal…

  5. Be Distinctive or Be Related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections…

Why did you make this?!

It's a part of my schools IT-course. Also, I'm really interested in flags and their design and some countries previous flag designs (especially European flags).

That's basically it!
